I wrote this album in the winter of 2010/2011 but never released it because it never quite met my expectations. I always liked the tracks but they didn't come together to form the album I had made in my head. I have decided to give it away now to show my appreciation to you people out there reading this right now.
I made almost all of these songs with a digital piano, a loop pedal, a guitar, a field recorder, and FL Studio 7 in various combinations.
During the months that I wrote these songs I was going through a really strange part of my life as it was very soon after I dropped out of college to pursue a music career, but at that point things weren't really panning out. I had no job, no money, no connections- I was 18 and living in Brooklyn. Needless to say, I was going through a lot of stress, both career-wise and emotionally. I was wading through an ideological battlefield in my head, not sure whether to give in and do something 'practical' with my life, or keep fighting for my love of music. This album is my personal struggles from that period distilled into musical form.
The title of the album is a reference to a Nietzsche quote- "Battle not with monsters, lest ye become a monster, and if you gaze into the abyss, the abyss gazes also into you."
Oh yeah, and the album download comes with a super hi-res version of the album cover (minus the album title, just says oddlogic) that looks awesome as a desktop wallpaper.
My next 'real' album, 'Darling', will be out sometime soon on OUTLIER RECORDINGS.
